About PFAS

What are PFAS, and why do people ask about them?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a large group of synthetic chemicals sometimes used to make products water-, stain-, or grease-resistant. Because some consumers prefer to avoid them, we want to be clear about what is and isn't in the Chilipad 2.0.

Does the Chilipad 2.0 contain PFAS?
The Chilipad 2.0 system (Cover, Hydrolayer, and Water Hose) does not contain any intentionally added PFAS. The textile and Hydrolayer materials were tested for Total Organic Fluorine by an independent testing laboratory and passed. The system also meets current U.S. state regulatory requirements for PFAS in products.

Is the waterproof layer PFAS-free?
The waterproof laminate was included in the same independent testing for Total Organic Fluorine and passed.

What does "Total Organic Fluorine" testing tell you?
It measures the total amount of organic (carbon-bound) fluorine in a material, which is a broad screen for the presence of PFAS-type chemicals.

Chemical Treatments

Are any chemical finishes applied to the Cover or Hydrolayer?
No. No chemical finishes, including antimicrobial, stain-resistant, flame-retardant, or durable water repellent (DWR) treatments, are added to the Chilipad 2.0 textile and Hydrolayer materials.

Testing and Certifications

Is the Chilipad 2.0 tested for VOCs?
Yes. The materials were tested by an independent laboratory for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and no emissions were found.

Is the Chilipad 2.0 certified OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 or GREENGUARD Gold?
The Chilipad 2.0 holds neither certification.

Hydrolayer Materials

What is the Hydrolayer made of?
The Hydrolayer is made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane).

Does the Hydrolayer contain PVC, phthalates, or BPA?
The Hydrolayer was tested by an independent laboratory for compliance with California Proposition 65 requirements for PVC, phthalates, BPA, and other biphenols. No nonconformances were found.
