When and why you should prime your Hydrolayer

Replacing the pad

  • A brand-new pad arrives bone-dry. Air fills every micro-channel, so heat transfer is almost zero until water moves in. Priming pushes that air out, wets the entire surface in seconds, and gives you full performance from the very first run.

Pulling the system out of storage

  • During downtime water slowly drains or evaporates, letting air creep back into the lines. Priming re-establishes an unbroken water column, eliminating gurgles and restoring steady temperatures.

Reconnecting after you have drained the pad

  • Draining is smart before shipping, winterizing, or major maintenance, but it leaves nothing but air behind. A quick prime drives that air out, prevents dry spots that lead to hot-spots, and safeguards pumps from losing prime.

Additional things to keep in mind

After any component swap

  • Whether you have changed the pad, hose, or controller, opening the circuit invites air inside. Priming ensures the fresh part joins a fully flooded system.

After a major temperature swing

  • Rapid cooling or heating can release dissolved gases from the water, forming tiny bubbles. A short priming cycle purges those micro-bubbles, keeping flow and sensor readings rock-solid.

Whenever performance dips

  • If you notice new hot-spots, noisy flow, or erratic temperature control, trapped air is often the culprit. A quick prime is the fastest first step in troubleshooting.

The key takeaway is simple:

If air has entered the Hydrolayer because you installed new parts, took the unit out of storage, drained it, or noticed unusual behavior, a quick priming session brings everything back to peak condition.

  • Restores maximum heat-transfer efficiency
  • Shields pumps and pipes from cavitation and corrosion
  • Steadies control loops and sensor readings
  • Discourages rust and bio-growth
